Documentary Screening: Ambassade

13 Oct 2026 CICG, Rue de Varembé 17, 1211 Genève — Plenary B Hybrid Documentary Screening
Geneva Peacebuilding Platform

This documentary screening of Ambassade (2018) by Swiss filmmaker Daniel Wyss explores the role of diplomacy, mediation and territorial representation during the 1979–1981 American hostage crisis in Iran.

Through the lens of Switzerland’s diplomatic engagement, the film sheds light on the often discreet but essential role played by neutral intermediaries in maintaining channels of communication during periods of acute political tension. It offers a compelling reflection on how diplomacy can operate when formal relations are strained or broken, and on the importance of trust, discretion and sustained dialogue in preventing further escalation.

The screening will invite audiences to reflect on the enduring relevance of diplomatic mediation in today’s geopolitical context, particularly at a time when communication between states is increasingly difficult yet more necessary than ever.

By revisiting a landmark episode of international diplomacy, Ambassade provides an opportunity to consider the contribution of neutral actors, good offices and mediation to conflict prevention and peaceful international relations.
