Peacebuilding in an Era of Geopolitical Fracture

The global order is undergoing a period of profound change and instability. Longstanding norms and practices that have supported international peace and stability for decades are eroding, while new arenas of contestation and conflict are emerging. At the same time, growing pressure on the multilateral system has prompted significant reforms, including within the United Nations peace and security architecture.

This high-level panel will examine how geopolitical fragmentation is reshaping risks and opportunities for peace, and how the UN and its partners are adapting their peacebuilding, prevention and peace support efforts in response. Drawing on the UN’s recent peacebuilding and peace operations reforms, the discussion will explore new approaches and tools, the importance of inclusive, locally relevant and nationally led action, and opportunities for stronger complementarity between peace processes, regional organisations, national governments and local actors.
