Opening plenary - Reaffirming the Peace-Security Nexus in Turbulent Times: Vienna and Geneva's Common Agenda

Geneva Peace Forum, oiip - Austrian Institute for International Affairs, Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs

This opening plenary will examine why reaffirming the Peace-Security nexus is especially urgent in today’s geopolitical environment. Against a backdrop of growing geopolitical rivalry, pressure on multilateralism, and increasingly fragmented approaches to global challenges, the discussion will explore how peace and security can be understood and advanced as mutually reinforcing rather than competing priorities. Bringing together perspectives from Geneva and Vienna, it will highlight the complementarity between their respective multilateral ecosystems, reflect on promising strategies to strengthen cooperation across institutional silos, and consider how greater synergies can help elevate peacebuilding and operationalize more integrated approaches in practice.
