Guillaume Pierrehumbert was born and raised in Switzerland, where he earned a master’s degree in environmental science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne in 2000. He worked in the field of occupational health as a researcher focusing on chemical exposure and accident modeling. He then joined the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to develop IT tools, particularly geographic information systems, for the “Water and Habitat” unit. After four years at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva, he undertook several assignments as a Water and Habitat engineer in Eritrea, Rwanda, Iraq, Pakistan, Israel, Palestine, and Nigeria; most of these were as country program manager. He then served as the ICRC’s regional advisor on water and environmental issues for the Near and Middle East, based in Amman, before returning to Geneva in 2018 to serve successively as deputy head and then head of the Water and Habitat Unit. In December 2024, he joined the Geneva Cantonal Water Office as its Director General. This office, which has 100 employees, works to promote respect for water, revitalize it, and share it to support life through coherent, coordinated, and efficient actions that bring together the various stakeholders in the water sector and raise public awareness of the importance of conscious, measured, and rational water use.
